The Fluidity and Direction of National Identity
Journalist and broadcaster, Gary Younge opened his presentation by challenging the sanctity of tradition. He argued that everyone is born into a living narrative that is a continual process of the introduction, evolution and mutation of tradition. He argued that there was no such thing as good and bad heritage, but that the danger lay in failing to recognize the difference between heritage and mythology.
He considered the ways in which we examine identity, and rejected the option of considering an identity in a human vacuum. Instead he encouraged people to consider the complexities of history in order to produce a dynamic, honest understanding of who we are and how we came to be.
He concluded by explaining that the importance of identity and what makes us different can often be overemphasized, and whilst identity is a great place to start, it is a bad place to finish.
"Less powerful identities are constantly examined, the more powerful are endlessly presumed"
