So where to now?
A Heritage Lottery Fund Perspective.
Heritage is about more than preserving ’old’ buildings and monuments. Heritage in the 21st Century is altogether more complex. Inextricably linked to history and identity, heritage is an evolving process where how we remember the past allows us to move forward to a shared future.
As a funder, HLF endeavours to ensure that the stories from our past are told in a way that others can access, understand and learn from them. It is a process that allows many voices, a process that, on the one hand, acknowledges the differences in our identities, but on the other hand, moves to establish that there are more ways we are alike.
Every one of us in Northern Ireland has a responsibility in how we use the past, today. How we do so, will say much about who we are, who we want to be, and the type of society we want in the future.
One very clear conclusion from the conference was that the role that heritage can play in creating a future for us all is a very positive one. As well as providing economic opportunity through making Northern Ireland a more attractive place to live in, invest in, as well as visit, it can also provide us with the tools to value our ever growing diversity.
