Unveiling the mural

Rosemary Butler AM (pictured, above left), Chair of the Assembly’s Culture,Welsh Language and Sport Committee, opened the Wales Identity Day 2006 celebrations at Newport Market on November 24 by talking about the city’s long history of immigration and the impact of ethnic diversity in creating a vibrant shared heritage.

Radio 1 DJ Bethan Elfyn (pictured, above right), who unveiled the Wales Identity Day 2006 mural with Ms Butler, spoke about the Welsh music that had such an impact on her identity as a teenager. She
cited the lyrics of the Manic Street Preachers as a major influence on her sense of local pride as the band changed media perceptions of Welsh culture and reached a global audience.
