Wales Identity Day
Rt Hon
Rhodri Morgan
"I firmly believe that our heritage matters, because
not only does it define who we were, but also who
we will become. With each generation our society
changes, and new cultures mix with established
ones, creating new traditions and redefining our
sense of identity."
Rhodri Morgan AM, First Minister for Wales,
explored notions of Welsh identity, contrasting
Wale's industrial foundations in coal, steel and
farming with the modern Wales which is focused
on technology and science. He posed a question
that, as our heritage is constantly changing and
evolving, how do we decide what is important to
preserve for the future? As people have different views, who is to say that what
I value is any more important than what you value?'
He commented that young people are the key to
safeguarding Wale's heritage and identity; 'Without
inspiring an interest in heritage in our children we
cannot preserve it for future generations. Heritage
projects can give both a sense of place and pride
in who we are and where we come from. As many
Heritage Lottery-funded Young Roots projects
illustrate, exploring their past can help young
people build confidence and learn new skills.'
