Who do we want to be?
A Vision of Wales
Bradley Whyte from Yale College,Wrexham
Winner of the Icons and Heroes category:
"I decided to base my work around education in Wales, since I believe this is where the future lies for us.This decision was made as we are celebrating 100 years since the famous Welsh playwright Emlyn Williams was born. Emlyn Williams was renowned for his vociferous support of education so I produced a series of portraits of teachers from my old high school in Rhosnesni."
Kasey Collier from Swansea College
Winner of the Wild Wales category:
"When looking at my own identity and the place where I live – Mumbles – I realised that transportation has been a big part of my village's role in Swansea's overall history. I decided to demonstrate the rush hour, the all-day traffic jam that reflects Mumbles today. I arranged the vehicles in a series of growing rings – the beginning and end of this thread cannot be seen – there is no clear destination but the volume is increasing."
Nicole Marshall from Yale College Wrexham
Winner of the Myths and Memories category:
"Gwaragedd Annwn are Welsh water spirits living in a sunken castle in one of the many beautiful lakes in Wales.Their world is made of luscious fruits, wild flowers and soft music. The title of this piece is ‘Ar Doriad Gwawr' and translates to ‘At Daybreak', reflecting Gwaragedd Annwn in her mystical world, before the sun has risen."
Sian Jones from Coleg Ceredigion
Winner of the Heavy Metal and Rock category:
"Before the industrial revolution, rural Wales' main industry was farming. The Penydarren locomotive became the first steam engine to run successfully on rails, which ran between Merthyr Tydfil and present day Abercynon. This was absolutely crucial to the shape of Wales today. It opened up the west coast of Wales to the rest of Britain. The inspiration for my work followed a visit to the quilt exhibition in Llanidloes where I saw the use of recurring patterns and shapes. In this piece I've combined stencils and collaged materials together into an abstract form to convey Welsh industry from this period."
